What Are BIM Shop Drawings?

BIM shop drawings are construction and fabrication documents generated directly from a fully coordinated 3D model. Unlike design drawings, shop drawings carry the precision required to physically build, prefabricate and install building services.

A spool drawing tells the factory exactly what to cut. A penetration plan tells the GC exactly where to core. A set-out drawing tells the superintendent exactly where to place equipment — with coordinates extracted from the model, not scaled from a 2D sheet.

How Shop Drawings Differ from Design Drawings

Design drawings show intent. Shop drawings show reality. The difference is the coordinated BIM model sitting behind them — all clashes resolved, all routes confirmed, all invert levels locked.

 

Why the BIM Model Must Be Coordinated Before Shop Drawings Are Issued

Shop drawing geometry is fabrication geometry. Spool geometry is signed off — every cut length and fitting count is fabrication-ready. If the model is still moving (clashes being resolved, routes being changed), the shop drawing is wrong the moment it’s issued.

BIMBAM does not issue shop drawings from uncoordinated models. The model must reach zero hard clashes before a single spool drawing leaves the team.

Phase 01

Superintendent Preference Briefing (Before a Single Drawing Is Issued)

Every superintendent runs the job differently. Before the first drawing is produced, our BIM Lead meets or calls the superintendent to confirm:

  • Preferred drawing format: A1 / A3 / A4, portrait or landscape, PDF or printed
  • Level of annotation: full dimensions and notes vs. clean minimal callouts
  • Delivery method: BIM 360 transmittal, email PDF, shared drive, or hard copy
  • 3D content preference: some supts want isometrics on every sheet; others want 2D only
  • RFI routing: direct to BIM Lead or through PM
  • Markup format for redlines: PDF markups, site photos, or a call

What is the difference between spool drawings and shop drawings?

A spool drawing is a specific type of shop drawing for a pre-fabricated pipe or duct assembly.
It shows cut lengths, fitting types and connection specs for a discrete fabricated unit.
Shop drawings is the broader category — including spool drawings, panel schedules, penetration
plans, set-out drawings, and electrical tray layouts.

A .MAF (Manufacturing and Fabrication) file is exported from Fabrication CADmep and carries
pre-cut lengths, fitting specs and part numbers directly from the BIM model. It is used by
the factory to fabricate off-site. BIMBAM also uses MAF data to validate BIM schedule
quantities — two sources, one answer.
